The HST (Half
Square Triangle) Garden Step blocks were quick and easy. The
pattern called for one block; I made two and will probably need three
more, since this quilt needs to be four times larger than the pattern in
my book, and I will be making matching pillows besides. It was a
simple matter to make two, in any case, since the pattern calls for me
to cut squares rather than triangles for this block.
I took photos
of the triangles and switched them to gray scale before sewing them
together, so that I could get the color values in the order I wanted
them -- light to dark, running cattycorner from bottom right to top left
in one block, and top left to bottom right in the other. My book
showed a mixed scrappy look;
I prefer a
rhyme and a reason.
(And yes, I
realize that the pink triangle in the top right corner is a little
lighter color value than some of those triangles closer to the bottom
right corner; but it had to be there, because it was pink, and that's
where another pink triangle had to go.)
